Associate

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and ambitious solicitor to join and grow our UK insurance team.

The role holder will assist the casualty Partners, to manage complex and high value casualty claims, as well as less complex claims, under supervision. The team manages a variety of claims including UK-based injury, property damage and product liability claims, as well as international casualty work. These claims often involve criminal / regulatory elements as well as civil claims for damages. The team assists insurers and policyholders from a variety of industry sectors, including sports, adventure activities, transport, manufacture, construction, hospitality and retail.

Hours Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm

Responsibilities

  • Initial report/review and setting strategy for the management of claims
  • Considering the concepts and merits of primary and secondary liability in employers liability and public liability claims
  • Instructing Counsel/investigators/medical and other experts
  • Reviewing evidence, for example: witness statements, GP records, Occupational Health/ Personnel records, inspection reports etc
  • Reviewing and/or reporting on exchange of evidence, receipt of medical evidence, joint statements
  • Preparing and checking trial bundles
  • Quantifying claims and conducting negotiations / other ADR processes (e.g. mediation)
  • Conducting CMC’s and application hearings
  • Drafting pre-trial reports
  • Drafting questions to medical experts
  • Attending conferences and trial with Counsel
  • Developing strong and effective working relationships with clients
  • Undertaking business development, networking and marketing so as to assist with the expansion of the firm’s casualty offering and client base

Person Specification

  • Previous experience in managing complex defendant EL/PL claims (essential)
  • Circa 3 years PQE (ideal, however we welcome applicants with a range of PQE)
  • Demonstrable experience with regulatory, criminal and/or Coroner’s Inquest investigations (ideal)
  • Experience with international work (e.g. advising on jurisdictional issues) and insurance advisory work (e.g. coverage advices)
  • Commercially focused with a good grounding in defendant PI work
  • Keen to engage in business development, and to build their own reputation in the market
  • Able to use their own initiative, and to adopt a solution rather than problem mind-set
  • Motivated to grow with the team to become a recognised expert
  • Ability to manage time effectively and perform well under pressure
  • A strong team player with a collaborative approach to work
  • Strong attention to detail and drafting skills
