Stefanie is an experienced commercial litigator (dual-qualified in Scotland, England & Wales) with a broad marine practice.
She has particular expertise in a wide-range of shipping matters including issues arising at ports and harbours, collisions, offshore disputes as well as incidents at sea resulting in loss of life and catastrophic injury. She is particularly well versed in international matters involving multiple jurisdictions. Stefanie also has extensive experience in construction, energy and property disputes.
She holds a Certificate in P&I Insurance from an International Group P&I Club. Stefanie is part of the Comité Maritime International Working Group on Polar Shipping and heads up the sub-group that deals with the applicability of the COLREGS in the polar regions.
My matter highlights
- A multi-million pounds subsea cable damage claim involving the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims.
- A case involving the Limitation Act 1980 in which she was successful at the Court of Appeal.

We are pleased to be celebrating one year since opening our first Scottish office in the city of Glasgow. Stefanie Johnston, dual-qualified Partner and Head of Scotland, has worked tirelessly over the last year to develop our offering through the opening of an Ince office in what is arguably an established Scottish market. Starting from the ground up, Stefanie and her team have successfully gained an admirable reputation in the region and further afield in the maritime, insurance, real estate and regulatory sectors.

News / Ince Scotland: Acquittal secured in marine prosecution - July 2022

Dual-Qualified Partner, Stefanie Johnston, led the team from Ince, assisted by Iain Franklin, Senior Associate, following a Scottish instruction to act on behalf of Mr. Steven Davie, who was being prosecuted for alleged breaches of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (“COLREGS”). The defence at trial was conducted by David Nicolson, advocate from Compass Chambers. Mr. Davie’s legal team successfully secured his acquittal at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Martlet Homes v. Mullaley and Co Ltd [2022] EWHC 1813 The Court has awarded a property owner damages for the defective design and installation of cladding. This is the first time the High Court has dealt with a dispute concerning cladding on a high rise building since the Grenfell Tower disaster.
