Paul is the Head of Greater China as well as being Chief Representative of Ince's Shanghai representative office.
Paul joined Ince Hong Kong as a trainee in 1996 and relocated to Shanghai in 2002; he has therefore been deeply involved in the Chinese market for many years. He has extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters. He became a partner in 2006 and is dual qualified in Hong Kong and England & Wales. Paul speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin and he is a keen golfer.
Shipping
Paul is familiar with all aspects of the firm’s contentious and non-contentious shipping practice. He has a strong focus on shipbuilding, offshore construction, ship repair and ship sale & purchase transactions. These include negotiation and drafting of contracts as well as handling of disputes and international arbitrations. He frequently represents major international shipowners, charterers, shipyards, banks and financial institutions.
Paul regularly advises owners and shipyards in relation to shipbuilding, offshore construction and ship repair transactions. He has given talks on Chinese shipbuilding issues in Bergen, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, Mumbai, Oslo, Piraeus, Shanghai and Singapore.
International Trade
Paul represents a number of large private and state-owned trading companies with a particular focus on commodities andoil and gas trading. He advises on all aspects of sale and transportation of crude oil, refined products and gas and he has also handled numerous disputes ranging from quality, shortage and late delivery to charterparty issues. This cover a broad spectrum of work, from drafting commercial sale and delivery contracts, transportation related issues to debt recovery. Paul also handles trade related disputes ranging from contamination, shortage to late delivery.
Commercial Disputes
Paul regularly handles shipping, trade and general commercial litigation covering a wide range of complex, multi-jurisdictional and cross border disputes, with a strong focus on international arbitration proceedings and enforcement/winding-up actions in London, Hong Kong and Singapore. These would include court proceedings as well as both ad hoc arbitrations and cases involving major arbitral institutions and procedural rules such as CIETAC, HKIAC, ICC, LCIA, LMAA, SIAC and UNCITRAL.

On 28 February 2015, the Chinese Supreme People’s Court (“SPC”) enacted a new judicial interpretation (“the Interpretation”) on ship arrest and judicial sale of ships.
