Nikolaos advises P&I Clubs, shipowning companies and charterers and represents them before Greek Courts on a wide range of wet and dry shipping disputes. He is experienced in claims arising in relation to charterparties, bills of lading, cargoes, shipbuilding contracts, sale and purchase agreements and labour disputes, as well as accidents at sea, pollution and maritime casualties.

Nikolaos also advises clients on insurance matters and their entry into commercial contracts including sale, lease and services agreements. He also advises banks on Greek law aspects of ship finance.

He has published papers in the Piraeus Bar Association’s periodical on issues such as the principle of autonomy in letters of credit, the applicable law on accidents of seamen, and commentaries on Judgments of the European Court of Justice regarding application of jurisdiction clauses in commercial agreements and contracts of affreightment.

Prior to joining the firm, Nikolaos worked as in-house legal counsel to a major shipping company in Greece and a Piraeus law firm.

Highlight Matters

  • Acting for the shareholders of shipping companies in shareholders’ disputes pending before Greek Courts and in LMAA arbitration proceedings.
  • Acted for a number of companies which suffered economic loss from the pollution caused by the sinking of the oil tanker Agia Zoni IΙ. Submitting the claims of such companies to the limitation of liability fund established in the Piraeus Court by the ship-owners’ insurers and to the IOPC Fund.
  • Acted for ship-owners in connection with a grounding of a vessel. 
  • Acted for a shipyard in connection with civil law disputes and criminal proceedings arising out of a pollution. 
  • Acted for the owner of a yacht in criminal proceeding arising out of the collision of the yacht with a fishing vessel.
  • Acted for the cargo owners in civil proceedings in connection with the provision of salvage services. 
  • Acted for the freezing of bank accounts of a borrower for outstandings due under a freight financing agreement.
