Martin is a Senior Associate in the shipping group, specialising in Admiralty and contractual matters, as well as yacht/superyacht disputes.

Martin qualified in the firm’s London office, gaining broad experience of contentious practice, including: P&I work for owners and charterers; collisions; grounding and sinking incidents; marine and non-marine insurance; oil-rig refurbishment disputes; and a variety of matters in the yacht and superyacht industry. He has also worked on compliance and regulatory matters relating to modern slavery and anti-corruption. His focus is now on the shipping and yacht/superyacht sectors, where he has particular experience in legally and technically complex cases.

Highlight Matters

  • Bitumen Invest AS v Richmond Mercantile Limited FZC [2016] EWHC 2957 (Comm). Acting for owners in High Court proceedings against charterers’ guarantors, involving a freezing injunction application and ending in summary judgment in clients’ favour.
  • Owners of the “Al Khattiya” v Owners of the “Jag Laadki” [2018] EWHC 389 (Admlty). Acting for owners in forum non conveniens application arising out of tonnage limitation issues in a multi-vessel collision occurring at the port of Fujairah.
  • Acting for owners in two disputes concerning decomposition of bulk fertiliser cargoes leading to the total loss of the vessel in each case (2017 onwards).
  • Acting for multiple yacht builders in product liability litigation against component manufacturers (2015 onwards).
  • Acting for owners in defending and pursuing claims arising out of two major container ship fires (2015 onwards).
  • Acting for owners in a defending a variety of liquid/gas cargo claims relating to e.g. alleged moisture and particulate contamination; alleged short delivery (2015 onwards)
  • Acting for a maritime security company in London arbitration involving issues of anti-corruption, interpretation of BIMCO Guardcon, insolvency, blackmail and defamation (2017-2018).
  • Acting for yacht managers and their liability insurers in London arbitration arising out of a refit and repair dispute (2016-2017).
  • Acting for charterers and their P&I insurers in London arbitration arising out of major vessel damage resulting from hydrocarbon explosion (2015-2017).
  • Acting for owners and their P&I insurers in tripartite proceedings in High Court and High Court of Singapore arising out of a collision during an at-sea bunkering operation (2015-2016).
