Delay in Diagnosis of Detached Retina

Insights / / Bristol

This month we have been considering medical negligence claims which relate to either a delay in treatment, misdiagnosis or the mismanagement of an eye problem.  This type of claim is worryingly common and eye problems which are not dealt with swiftly and efficiently can lead to very serious consequences for the sufferer, including at the farthest end of the scale, a complete loss of sight.  It is therefore not surprising that, if you are a victim of any of the above, we would recommend you seek the services of an experienced clinical negligence lawyer, to investigate the claim on your behalf.

We have previously looked at the issues surrounding a delay in diagnosis of glaucoma, a very common condition and one which, if not properly monitored and treated, can cause the sufferer extensive eye problems.

Another common example of a claim involving the eye is where there has been a delay in diagnosis of a retinal detachment.  This is where the retina, the tissue lining the inside of the eye, moves from its normal position.  People generally report either a sudden or gradual onset of blurred vision, flashes or floaters, like tiny little specs that appear to move across their visual field.  The National Eye Institute tell us that, if the condition is not promptly treated, it can cause total visual loss and that a retinal detachment is a medical emergency which requires urgent review and referral to a specialist eye practitioner, which is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment.

In a recently reported case a delay in exactly that type of referral discussed above led to a preventable loss of sight for one unfortunate gentleman, and, in turn, a successful damages claim against the Optometrist who should have spotted the signs and acted accordingly.  The gentleman concerned recovered a sum of money for the pain and suffering which he had to endure as a result of the delay in diagnosis of his condition and the provision of appropriate treatment, as well as for the loss of his sight.  He also lost a great deal of earnings during the time that he was unable to work as a result of the delay in that treatment, as well as future earnings because of his acquired disability, for which he also received compensation.

At Metcalfes we have a highly skilled team of medical negligence lawyers who have specialist knowledge and experience in helping people who have suffered eye injury.   We will investigate your claim and guide you through the process of claiming damages for the pain and suffering you have experienced as a result of the inadequate treatment you have received, as well as the out of pocket expenses you have incurred because of the injury, either now or those which may arise in the future.
