Rosita Lau is awarded Medal of Honour by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong

News / / Hong Kong

We are delighted to announce that Rosita Lau, Partner in our Hong Kong office, has been awarded the Medal of Honour in Hong Kong’s 2021 Honours List. Rosita is the first and only maritime lawyer to be awarded this prestigious honour since its inception in 1997.

This Medal of Honour recognises Rosita Lau’s work as a maritime lawyer as well as her personal contribution to actively promoting the development of all aspects of Hong Kong’s maritime industry locally, in Asia, and internationally, since the 1990s.

The Hong Kong Government complimented Ms. Lau as follows: "Ms Lau is awarded Medal of Honour in recognition of her contribution to the development of the maritime industry and reinforcing Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre."

Amidst her busy legal professional career, Ms. Lau has also enhanced Hong Kong’s status as an international maritime centre in her position as an ambassador of Hong Kong’s maritime industry in missions to overseas countries. These included promoting the all-encompassing maritime services that Hong Kong offers, speaking at and moderating international maritime forums, tightening the links and strengthening relationships between Hong Kong and other international maritime centres, and assisting in inviting overseas investors to invest in Hong Kong’s maritime industry. She carried out all these under various public duty appointments in a personal capacity, including her role as an appointed member of both the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council from 2010 to March 2016, and the Maritime and Port Board of the Hong Kong Government since April 2016 to present.

Julian Clark, Global Senior Partner at Ince, commented:

“Ince is delighted that Rosita’s contribution to the maritime industry both in Asia and on an international scale has been recognised by the Hong Kong government. Her unwavering commitment to providing excellent, specialised legal counsel as well as supporting the growth of Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre is to be admired.”

Rosita Lau, MH and Partner, also added:

“I am very honoured to receive this award and am grateful for the recognition by the Hong Kong Government. I have witnessed Hong Kong going from strength to strength as an international maritime centre and this is the rewarding result of not only my efforts but also those from the Government and many players in all the sectors of the Hong Kong maritime industry. Over the past few years, Hong Kong, as a special administrative region of China, has experienced new opportunities given China’s various international and regional initiatives. I will continue to help Hong Kong as best as I can to make it even more important and influential in the global maritime arena.”

Ms. Lau has over 20 years’ experience of advising on and acting for clients in complex multi-jurisdictional commercial disputes covering dry shipping, port and terminals, aviation, insurance, and international trade. She advised and acted for clients in Hong Kong, Mainland China, other Asia Pacific countries and other continents in litigations in domestic, English, and international courts, in many types of international arbitrations and mediations. Her client base includes leading international shipowners, Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I Clubs), mutual insurers, international charterers, ports and terminal operators, major Chinese Stated Owned Enterprises, freight forwarders, cargo interests, logistics operators, insurance companies and insurance brokers. Ms. Lau had made new maritime law with wide repercussions in the international maritime law and industry as the judgement of some of her cases remains the authority of the maritime issues concerned.

During Ms. Lau’s career she has received numerous regional and international awards. In 2010, she was ranked as one of the Top Ten Maritime Lawyers of the World by Lloyd’s List Global in the first ever publication of this ranking. Ms. Lau was also ranked one of the 100 Most Influential Maritime Personnel of the World in 2010 she received both accolades again in 2016, becoming the first Hong Kong lawyer to get these accolades and the first two-time Hong Kong winner of them. Lloyd’s List Asia awarded her the Individual Maritime Lawyer of the Year Award in 2016, becoming the first Hong Kong lawyer to win this award. In 2014, she won Euromoney Legal Media’s Best in Shipping in its Asia Women in Business Award category, once again becoming the first Hong Kong lawyer to win this award. In 2019, she was recognised by Seatrade Maritime Asia for the ‘Integration of Women in the Maritime Sector’ Award; the first and only female lawyer to have been awarded this.

She has been consistently ranked in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific as a Leading Individual in Shipping during the last 20 years. In April 2020, Ms. Lau was included into the Legal 500 Asia Pacific’s Hall of Fame at the inception of this accolade - becoming one of the very few maritime lawyers ranked – and  has been inducted again in the rankings in 2021. Chambers Global and Chambers Asia Pacific have ranked Ms. Lau as a Band 1 Shipping Litigation Lawyer throughout. Her performance and achievements elevated the standard and image of Hong Kong’s maritime legal services in the world and further raised Hong Kong’s status as an international maritime centre.
