Ince Team Asia concludes successful mock arbitration event

Ince Team Asia successfully concluded a mock arbitration event on 26 March in Shanghai, with a full-house of over 160 guests in attendance.

The mock arbitration simulated an actual international arbitration hearing involving an international trade dispute. The event was overwhelmingly received by the attendees, who were impressed by the very “real-life” nature of the hearing and expressed immense interest in attending more of such events in the future. To quote one of the attendees, “this is the best law firm event I have attended” – this was no surprise bearing in mind that while the “case” adapted from an actual arbitration consisting of witness statements, bundles of documents and real-life witnesses, the advocates and witnesses, in our scenario, prepared for the mock arbitration separately, with no prior rehearsals.

The guests in attendance were from a diverse background, including shipping companies, traders, brokers, insurers, shipyards and leasing companies, some of whom hailed from other cities including Dalian (in Northern China), Guangzhou (in Southern China) and neighbouring cities in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces.

Paul Ho, Managing Partner of our Shanghai office, kicked off the event with a welcome address. The mock arbitration “ensemble” consisted of our team of lawyers across our Asian offices from Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore. Rosita Lau, Partner of our Hong Kong office, was the sole and presiding arbitrator. The Claimant’s Counsel were Wai Yue Loh (Managing Partner of our Beijing office) and Shirley Li (Partner of our Shanghai office) while the Respondent’s Counsel were Nicholas Lum (Partner of our Shanghai / Singapore offices) and Peter Huang (Associate of our Singapore office), with Wai Yue Loh and Nicholas Lum, both of whom practised at the Singapore bar in the earlier years of their career, cross examining the witnesses “live” on the stand. The witnesses for the mock arbitration were played by Samuel Ding (Senior Associate of our Shanghai office), Toby Yip (Associate of our Shanghai office) and Cindy Wang (Associate of our Beijing office). Zeldar Wang (Managing Associate of our Shanghai office) served as the narrator for this event.

This successful event for the Ince Gordon Dadds network in Asia follows hot on the heels of the inaugural mock arbitration event in Beijing last year (2018), which attracted an equally large number of clients hailing from Chinese state-owned enterprises and private conglomerates both in Beijing and Northern China.
